Oak Wilt Disease: What You Need To Know
So, what is Oak Wilt? Oak Wilt is a tree disease caused by a fungus (Bretziella fagacearum). This fungus blocks the water flow inside the tree. Without water, the tree starts to wilt, and if left untreated, it will die. Red oaks are hit the hardest and can die very quickly. White oaks can fight it off better and may survive longer.
Is Oak Wilt treatable? Oak Wilt can be treated, but it’s not easy. If caught early, a tree expert may use special injections to help the tree fight off the disease. Fungicide treatments work best on white oaks or red oaks that aren’t yet infected. Sometimes, infected trees must be removed to stop the disease from spreading. Always ask a certified arborist before taking action.
How Does Oak Wilt Spread? Oak Wilt spreads in two main ways:
- Beetles: Tiny beetles carry the fungus from one tree to another. These beetles are attracted to fresh wounds on trees, like cuts from pruning.
- Root Connections: Trees of the same type growing close together may have roots that are connected underground. The fungus can move from one tree to the next through these root systems.
This is why pruning oak trees during spring and early summer is risky—beetles are most active then.
